GE and knowledge management - If It Ain't Broke, Fix It

From Technology Review - If It Ain't Broke, Fix It. [subscription required] GE Aircraft Engines is using a fascinating collection of technologies -- remote sensing, satellite communications, data mining, and customer relationship management -- to get more value for itself and its airline customers.

Remote sensors in the engines transmit telemetry data back to GE in Ohio. There data mining of the patterns of telemetry data across this specific engine and its companions helps GE understand that preemptive maintenance when the plane lands is the right thing to do for GE and for the Airbus 340 powered by that engine.

What makes this case so compelling is that it shows how multiple technologies and processes can be knit together in today's world to create unique business and service opportunities. What makes sense for a jet engine today will become commonplace in our cars and in other products in just a short time. Stay tuned.
