Research on Learning and Performance - Learner-centered. Quote: learning ought to be created by the learner. where in traditional learning (and traditional online learning) the selection and sequencing of the learning materials is a task performed by the instructor, in learning centered learning the selection and sequencing of the learning materials is a task performed by the student

from [Serious Instructional Technology]

The odd thing is how odd this sounds. A few years back when I ran training at DiamondCluster, I tried to move us in the direction of something we called personal learning plans. We'd provide some guidance about what we thought was important, but we'd let each individual design their own approach. I expected and got resistance from many of my partners who were uncomfortable with what looked like giving up control.

I was surprised, however, by the general passivity of most of our people. They wanted someone else to lay out the path. They were more than willing to push down the path, but they really didn't know how to go about drawing their own maps.

The interesting exception was the technology group. As a group, they were much more likely and accustomed to figure out what they needed to learn and go do it on their own.

Commonplace Books: "Commonplace books have their origin in the Renaissance as one means of coping with the information overload of that era. They helped students select, organize, classify, and remember key moral precepts"

So weblogs cycle us back to the origins of the book. In one of Jerome Bruner's spirals of learning, weblogs are simply a new manifestation of long needs to make sense out of the world.
